A SUMMARY OF POSITION
Destination Cleveland is looking for an expert writer to oversee the written voice and tone of the Cleveland travel and tourism brand and to extend the reach of our narrative both online and offline. This person will write, curate, and organize content for the website, collateral and other mediums, as well as maintain the department content calendar. Additionally, the position will act as a primary editor and proofreader for the organization. An onsite writing test and editing test will be administered during the interview process.
ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
Act as manager and liaison for all content produced, outsourced or curated by the Marketing/PR department, working in tandem with the Sr. Director of PR, the Sr. Marketing Manager, the Interactive Media Manager, the Publications Manager and the Web Manager.
Lead the development of the department content calendar by working with department staff to ensure that a calendar is created as a part of the annual marketing planning process, that the content themes support the marketing plan, and that the calendar is updated on a regular basis.
Ensure department copywriting needs are always met by coordinating with department staff to write, curate, repurpose and/or outsource content for collateral (brochures, annual reports, etc.), the website, e-newsletters, and other digital platforms.
Act as one of the organization’s primary editors and proofreaders for both online and offline content ensuring appropriate tone and applying AP or SEO standards as appropriate.
Act as primary resource for leisure visitor content by copywriting, curating, outsourcing and ensuring timely delivery of content for offline and online mediums, including the monthly VisitCLE e-newsletter.
Regularly write and post timely and relevant content for the website based on current events. ï‚· Conduct interviews representing a broad spectrum of people and translate into stories for multiple platforms.
Curate content by creating strategic relationships with local freelancers, publications, etc. to provide an authentic perspective of Cleveland residents.
Enhance articles and other content written for Destination Cleveland’s website with the addition of outside links, maps, and slideshows.
Assist in online coverage of major Destination Cleveland or travel/tourism events to ensure high-quality, consistent community coverage online.
Partner with Web Manager to develop promotional campaign sections of website to enhance coverage and increase user engagement.
Assist in the management and use of user-generated content on the website.
Assist with PR/Communications press trips and hosted writers.
Assist with Destination Cleveland special events, as needed.
Help research and implement “best practices” in content management.
Perform other duties as assigned by the VP of Marketing.
QUALIFICATIONS

REQUIREMENTS EXPERIENCE AND EDUCATION
Minimum of seven years of journalism experience writing for an online paper or magazine or comparable copy-writing experience
An undergraduate or graduate degree in a communications-related field
Experience maintaining a content or editorial calendar
At least three years of management experience
TECHNICAL SKILLS
AP Style editing
Writing/editing for SEO
Superior journalism and writing skills (including AP Style)
An understanding of basic legal principles of journalism
Familiarity with Content Management Systems
Proficient technology application skills; Advanced MS Office (Word, Excel, PowerPoint & Access)
MS Outlook and Internet Explorer LANGUAGE SKILLS
Possess expert written and verbal communications skills
Must be able to edit others’ content quickly and develop other writers within the department
Utilize strong news judgment, journalistic integrity and understanding of reader needs and expectations
REASONING ABILITY
Ability to solve practical problems and deal with a variety of concrete variables in situations where only limited standardization exists
Ability to interpret a variety of instructions furnished in written, oral, diagram or schedule form
Must be flexible and resourceful
